OpenAI’s latest innovation, custom GPTs, was unveiled on Monday, marking a significant advancement for ChatGPT aficionados looking to tailor the AI assistant to unique roles or objectives.

Alongside the ability for users to exchange these GPT roles, OpenAI is set to launch a GPT Store, anticipated to arrive later this month, with plans to share profits with the creative minds behind these roles.
Since the introduction of ChatGPT, there has been a steady demand for more customizable options to tailor the AI to users’ specific needs. While OpenAI responded with Custom Instructions in July, allowing for the setting of certain preferences, the community continued to call for greater control over the customization process.
The preview of the Custom GPTs interface provided by OpenAI revealed the GPT Store’s lineup, including specialized AI assistants named “Writing Coach,” “Sous Chef,” “Math Mentor,” and “Sticker Whiz.” These GPTs are crafted to support a variety of tasks, from providing writing guidance and cooking recipes to offering homework assistance and transforming concepts into custom stickers.
Prior to this, OpenAI presented a feature named “Custom Instructions,” which was reported on back in July. Through our tests, we observed that toggling between different roles was not as smooth as one might hope, typically requiring the cumbersome step of copying and pasting text from separate documents. The new GPT builder aims to refine and automate these transitions, enhancing user experience by a substantial margin.
Through social media, members of the ChatGPT community often shared prompts or Custom Instructions that worked well for a specific purpose, such as giving recipe advice or playing the role of dungeon master in a table-top RPG. Along those lines, sharing GPTs will now become socially integrated with the GPT Store, where a well-crafted role can be used by others. OpenAI says the Store will have leaderboards for popular GPTs, and eventually, GPT creators will be able to earn money based on how many people are using it.

OpenAI is taking user customization to the next level by introducing the GPT Builder, a feature that empowers users to work directly with a conversational AI model. This tool allows for the detailed definition of an AI assistant’s knowledge scope and behavior.

Adhering to stringent privacy standards, conversations with GPTs remain confidential and are not accessible to the GPT builders.

If a GPT incorporates third-party APIs, it is up to the user to decide if any data is transmitted to those services. Furthermore, all GPTs are required to align with OpenAI’s comprehensive usage policies, cementing their commitment to responsible and secure AI deployment.

Today’s most significant revelation from OpenAI was undoubtedly the introduction of the GPT Store. This platform is set to revolutionize the distribution of Custom GPTs, offering a centralized marketplace for users to access a variety of specialized AI models.
