Shadow and Bone author Leigh Bardugo responds to the show’s cancellation. Why Did Netflix Cancel Shadow and Bone?
Shadow and Bone was among several Netflix cancellations. Others include the Kim Cattrall show Glamorous along with the adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall. The reporting on the reasoning behind the cancellations noted that it’s part of an overall planned decrease in the number of scripted originals, which reached 599 in 2022 by one estimate. Another factor cited is the show’s performance versus its cost, pointing to the fact that Shadow and Bone did not become the hit that Netflix hoped.
It’s also mentioned that the delays in writing and filming, as the result of fallout from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, have led to a scramble as streamers adjust their schedules to deal with a logjam of programming in 2024 and 2025.
