Despite the disastrous aftermath of the Riddler’s semi-successful terrorist plan, not many major characters died in The Batman, which means that most of them could return either in DC’s upcoming The Batman – Part II, a spinoff like The Penguin, or the final installment in Matt Reeves’ The Batman trilogy, The Batman – Part III.
DC has a huge library of characters, and Batman’s comic book lore is filled with characters who have either been translated to live-action multiple times or haven’t yet had the opportunity to debut outside the comic book pages. Robert Pattinson’s Batman is likely to return with an updated Batsuit and new weapons, and his Bruce Wayne persona is likely to become more open to the public as he tries to make a change in Gotham without resorting to brutal violence.

Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle fully adopted her Catwoman persona in The Batman, where her best friend’s death motivated her to take justice into her own hands despite her lack of experience. Catwoman couldn’t take down Carmine Falcone by herself, so she tried to move on by leaving Gotham behind at the end of The Batman. However, Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman will likely return in The Batman – Part II, which means that Batman and Catwoman could reunite soon, although that doesn’t mean that they will be on the same side, as 80-year-history has demonstrated.

More likely to return than Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman is Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth, however, as Andy Serkis’ version of Alfred Pennyworth still has quite a lot of untold story to tell in The Batman – Part II. In The Batman, Serkis’ Alfred revealed to Bruce Wayne that his father Thomas kept dark secrets and secret enemies nobody else knew about. Alfred Pennyworth’s own backstory before The Batman could also be explained in The Batman – Part II, which could establish this iteration of Batman’s right hand as the most complex portrayal in live-action.
7 James Gordon

Like Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon’s appearance in every Batman movie is almost guaranteed. Jeffrey Wright’s version of James Gordon, specifically, has been one of the most active iterations of the character in live-action, as The Batman followed him and the Dark Knight working together to take down The Riddler and The Penguin, shoulder to shoulder. Considering how loyal Batman and Gordon are to each other, Jeffrey Wright is more than likely to return in The Batman – Part II, perhaps in a similar capacity to Matt Reeves’ first The Batman installment.
6 Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin

Colin Farrell stole the spotlight in The Batman with his unique portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin, a sleazy crime lord with enough influence and wits to escape Batman and the downfall of Carmine Falcone’s death unscathed. Before The Batman – Part II arrives, Colin Farrell will return as Oswald Cobblepot in The Penguin, the DC villain’s own TV spinoff. Farrell isn’t confirmed to return in The Batman – Part II yet, but since Matt Reeves’ Batman universe isn’t an expansive cinematic universe as big as the DCU, the Penguin likely to have at least a small role in the sequel.

With Barry Keoghan’s Joker right beside him, The Riddler will likely become even more dangerous in the near future. The Batman – Part II may focus on a new Batman villain. Meanwhile, The Batman‘s Joker and Riddler partnership will result in a scheme to claim revenge on the Dark Knight in The Batman – Part III.
4 The Joker

The Batman delivered a shocking character reveal with the introduction of Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who welcomed the Riddler to Arkham. Keoghan’s Joker appeared obscured by shadows in the film, but a deleted The Batman scene revealed that Keoghan’s Joker is disfigured. While the Joker’s role in The Batman was small and most of his screentime was cut, it’s possible that The Batman – Part II will feature Batman’s archnemesis in a bigger role. However, Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe might wait a little longer than the first sequel to fully explore the Joker in order to avoid comparisons with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
3 Sofia Falcone, Carmine Falcone’s Daughter

One DC character who wasn’t introduced in Matt Reeves’ The Batman but could appear in The Batman – Part II is Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone, daughter of fallen crime boss Carmine Falcone. As The Penguin‘s trailers suggest, Sofia Falcone will strike a partnership with Oswald Cobblepot, though how strong their business relationship will last will only be confirmed in the DC miniseries. In The Batman – Part II, Sofia Falcone could pull the strings behind Gotham’s crime and corruption, which could be what allows a new villain to rise and terrorize the city after the Riddler weakened it.
2 Sal Maroni, Gotham Crime Boss

Gotham City crime Boss Sal Maroni has already appeared in live-action Batman movies before, played by Eric Roberts in The Dark Knight trilogy and David Zayas in Gotham. In Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, Sal Maroni will be first played by Shawshank Redemption and Starship Troopers actor Clancy Brown in The Penguin. It’s unknown whether Sal Maroni will survive until the end of Oswald Cobblepot’s miniseries, but it’s possible that he will play a minor antagonist role in The Batman – Part II, where he could come face to face against Batman.

In The Batman, Alex Ferns’ Pete Savage was revealed to be Gotham’s corrupt commissioner, who took bribes from criminals and helped Carmine Falcone rise to power. Although one of the Riddler’s brutal riddles in The Batman killed Pete Savage mercilessly by trapping him in a cage and forcing rats to eat him from the inside out, Pete Savage could return in The Batman – Part II in the form of flashbacks, as he followed Carmine Falcone’s orders to take down Sal Maroni, who will likely become a more important figure after the events of The Penguin.
