Sex Education’s Season 4 Change Already Set Up The Perfect Spinoff

Summary

  • Sex Education season 4 set up the perfect spinoff with a new setting and cast, highlighting the potential for the Cavendish College location.
  • The move to Cavendish in the last season was a risky decision but paid off, allowing for the introduction of new characters and further growth of the Sex Education universe.
  • For a Cavendish College spinoff to work, it would need an all-new cast to avoid undoing the series finale’s attempts to wrap up the original characters’ storylines.

Sex Education might have come to an end with season 4, but the change in its last season already set up the perfect spinoff. The Netflix comedy had a vast, diverse ensemble, and the fourth and final season switched things up further. The regular students at Moordale High found themselves with no school, and they enrolled in Cavendish Sixth Form College in the final chapter of the story, resulting in some new characters in Sex Education season 4’s cast.

Sex Education was a coming-of-age comedy series, spread over four seasons, with Otis (Asa Butterfield) as the focus character, a student who becomes a sex therapist to help out the sexually confused students at his school. It followed a vast number of characters navigating life, love, and relationships while trying to find out who they were. The show became one of Netflix’s most successful series, thanks to its excellent writing, complex characters, and talented cast. Sex Education concluded with season 4 before dragging the story out, but there are some ways it could keep its spirit alive.

After Netflix announced that Sex Education would end with season 4, the writers had an opportunity to write the perfect send-off to the beloved characters, including Otis, Eric, Maeve, and Adam, all while introducing a new setting. Following the events of season 3, when Moordale High closed, the characters were relocated to a new place. Otis (Butterfield), Maeve (Emma Mackey), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood), Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling), and Viv Odusanya (Chinenye Ezeudu) all moved schools. Luckily, it all paid off because the setting included a brand-new cast and the opportunity to further grow the Sex Education universe.

Although the move to Cavendish was not initially planned, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Changing schools in its last season was a big risk, but Sex Education proved it could handle both a new location and a new cast. Season 4 dropped some of the recurring characters of season 3 like Ola (Patricia Allison), Lily (Tanya Reynolds), Miss Sands, and more. In return, it added new characters like O (Thaddea Graham), Abbi (Anthony Lexa), Aisha (Alexandra James), and many others. However, its school change also set up the perfect spinoff location, as the Cavendish school could continue the Sex Education universe.

Sex Education wrapped the storylines for its characters, but a Cavendish College spinoff would be a great move. It is the ideal setting for a new series, and it has the potential to grow into more spinoffs based on students in different eras. However, there is a big catch. In order to succeed, a spinoff needs a brand-new cast. Otherwise, any continuation would be Sex Education season 5 and would undo all the attempts to wrap up everything in the series finale. Given that season 4 didn’t spend much time focusing on the new characters, there are many exciting Cavendish stories that could be developed as a Sex Education spin-off.
